I made a device

Normally I'm not very good at the accessory bits of costumes, but this came out nice.

For a steampunk getup for an Unhallowed Metropolis LARP at a convention.

Wedding Photos!

Nov. 23rd, 2009 | 09:42 pm

What? I've only been married a year and a half.

Our families would have killed us if we didn't have pictures by this Xmas.

And here they are!

dreams

Nov. 23rd, 2009 | 08:58 am

This is getting annoying.

I have a very vivid dream life. I always have. Very, very vivid. They're often lucid, and even more often I'm aware I'm dreaming.

Which is cool.

Except, I also feel pain in my dreams. Like, actual pain. Which, when coupled with the fact that I often have nightmares, makes for some seriously unpleasant situations. I -feel- getting stabbed in the leg, or shot, or whatever else physically happens to me.

I've been trying to figure out some kind of logical explanation, and if I think about it, maybe the pain comes from something I'm feeling while asleep? But what kind of pain do you cause yourself in bed that is mimicked in a dream by getting a knife in the stomach?

And it's starting to be that the pain carries over into waking up. Two nights ago, I got shot in the neck (don't ask) and I woke up with a residual ache. I figured I probably just slept wrong. last night, I dreamed I broke my finger. Stupid thing -still- hurts.

I think I've -got- to be causing it somehow, but I don't know how to fix it.

That and I'm really tired of having seven thousand nightmares.

really good news

Nov. 22nd, 2009 | 01:55 pm

So, E has this money market account. We forgot he had it, as he gets really small yearly payments on it.

We're going to take the money from that, and pay off our credit card, and my last bit of medical bills. Thank god. That means the only debt we'll have will be my student loans.

This is a =huge= relief. And it actually looks like we'll have some left over to fix the oil leak in my car AND put some money in savings. This will take us from "just making ends meet" into "potential chance to get ahead."

And it gives us a bit of cushion in case something bad happens. Which, of course, it will. But hey, we will not be in debt.

Oh my god

Nov. 7th, 2009 | 09:32 pm

I cyberstalked and e-mailed one of my absolute best friends growing up.

And it was him.

And he wrote back.

And oh my -god-. This is epic. This is the guy whose family went camping with my family for years and years and years. This is the guy where him and his little brother and me and my little sister, we'd go play in his house and Silverado, and set traps and make forts.

This is the guy who treated me like -one of the guys-. Who, without knowing it, taught me that I could climb a tree, and use a knife, and make a bow, and build a fort just as good as all the other guys. That being a girl didn't mean i wasn't part of this huge culture of secret ninja-weapon-wielding-knights.

I don't think even now he'd understand how profound his effect on me was. I was never "a girl" to him. I was always just "Samantha." He taught me feminism, maybe even better than my feminist mother.

I never had anything to prove to either him or his brother. Sure I could swing out over their porch onto the trail and then go hiking. Sure I could do everything....

I am so glad I found him. Even if I never tell him any of this. It doesn't matter if he knows. It helped me.

NaNoWriMo

Nov. 2nd, 2009 | 10:02 pm

So, E talked me into doing National Novel Writing Month.

My goal here is not to come out with a complete novel. I doubt I can, and I don't want to strive for a workcount just to have a wordcount.

My goal is to write every single day. To get in the habit of writing. If, at the end of the month, I don't have a book, so what. I will have established a good pattern.

if anyone on my F-list is interested in reading my progress, lemme know. I probably won't be fishing for feedback at this point, this isn't a polished work, but it's nice to have people give you at least a little of the "hey, this doesn't make sense!" type of response.

I hate health care

Oct. 22nd, 2009 | 09:56 am

Woman is date raped. Doctor prescribes her a month of AIDS medication as a standard precaution. She later loses her health care and tries to get private care. She is refused because she's been on AIDS medication thus had a "prexisting condition

Healthy, though big, toddler denied health insurance for "obesity," a pre-existing condition. Except, he's not obese. He's just a big, healthy kid.

Toddler denied coverage for being "underweight"

Overheard, but not proven--
Woman gets HPV as a young teen. Is treated. Gets her vaccine, all while on parent's insurance. Is dropped when she becomes an adult. Cannot get healthcare because of "pre-existing condition."

Woman donates kidney to save son's life. Denied health insurance.

Several people have told me that they can't get tested for cancer that they are genetically pre-disposed to, because if anything's found, they'll get dropped from their insurance.

Several people have told me they're afraid to get STD tests, because if anything -does- ever show, they'll be dropped.

Costume/Makeup prelim

Oct. 17th, 2009 | 10:32 am

My costume!
It's not totally done. I am going to put a red tank top under the black, and make a few more holes in the red to break up the monotony. Also, don't have my stockings on.

First, makeup!
didn't hurt my eyes nearly as much this time. )

I had trouble getting full length pictures today 'cause I was in a hurry. These are only ok.

needs more red )

Need help--how to get the look of running makeup

Oct. 16th, 2009 | 04:57 pm

I need help achieving the look of running eyeliner/mascara without hurting my eyes.

I'm trying to get it to look like I've been crying or sweating, and everything has run down my cheeks.

First I tried just drawing it on with eyeliner, then with eyeshadow, then with watered down mascara. That just looked like I'd drawn lines on my face.

Then I just applied the makeup, splashed water on my face then blinked really hard. It worked but it also made my eyes sting like nobodies business.

So, I need advice. How to I artistically make my makeup run, without the pain?
